Spring Pruning at Cedar Ridge

Even though the groundhog predicted 6 more weeks of winter, we have started spring pruning here at Cedar Ridge.

Pruning is a process that involves cutting off canes to shape vines and optimize growth. In short, we remove unsustainable canes to help the vine focus on a small number of good canes. This process provides more consistency across vines and gives us more control. By pruning we are selecting the “fruiting wood” and therefore ensuring the quality of fruit produced. The staff members we have pruning are like surgeons as they carefully select good canes and shape the vine. This is a long process that takes roughly three months. Our pruning expert Sam (pictured above) is on his third pruning season making him a certified vine surgeon.

We are lucky to have such experienced and committed team members working in our vineyards!
